The Council on Aging serves Acton residents over 60 years of age, providing services, referrals, and information resources on a wide variety of topics. Social opportunities, educational experiences, financial counseling resources, transportation, therapeutic needs, and other opportunities fall within the Council's scope. The COA offers elder care resource consultations, home visits, handyman services, and serves as an intake center for heating fuel assistance, and an information source for issues like insurance guidance, elder law referrals, seasonal AARP tax help, and prescription programs. SNAP offers nutrition assistance to millions of eligible, low-income individuals and families and provides economic benefits to communities. SNAP is the largest program in the domestic hunger safety net. The Food and Nutrition Service works with State agencies, nutrition educators, and neighborhood and faith-based organizations to ensure that those eligible for nutrition assistance can make informed decisions about applying for the program and can access benefits. The Council on Aging can provide transportation on a first come, first served basis to Concord seniors around town for doctor's appointments, trips to the bank, haircuts, visits to a friend, events at the Council on Aging and so on. The Council on Aging van runs Monday through Friday, except for holidays. The first pickup of the day is 8:40 AM and the final pickup to return home is at 3:30 PM. The donation for a van ride, within the town limits, is $2 round trip. Emergency information must be on file in the office for seniors riding on the van. It is important that you call for a reservation in advance. You may sign up at any time. To save room, each shopper is limited to five (5) shopping bags. The van driver will help carry your bags if you are unable to do so.
